Facet - Vocabulary Word List

Facet Definition:

An aspect of something.

Examples:
  • The leader showed many facets of their personality when addressing the nation
  • The Captain scrutinised every facet of the ship it ensure it was in tiptop shape.

Connotation - Vocabulary Word List

Connotation Definition:

The association of a word or thing with an idea other than its literal meaning.

Examples:
  • The well decorated room gave the connotation of opulence and grandeur
  • The connotation of danger given to the shark makes humans wary of this magnificent animal

The word connotation is one that can be used in so many conversations that you are sure to find some great ways of bringing it into your spoken and written vocabulary.

Annihilation - Vocabulary Word List

Annihilation Definition:

The act of total and utter destruction through any means.

Examples:
  • The wooden hut suffered annihilation at the hands of the hurricanes strong winds
  • The Dinosaurs are thought to have seen complete annihilation and become extinct by a meteor

The word annihilation is not one that you will get to use very often but it is a big and interesting word to use in the right context when you get the chance.

Tentative - Vocabulary Word List

Tentative Definition:

To be uncertain or hesitant or for something not to be formally agreed or worked out

Examples:
  • The company formed a tentative agreement (the company made a provisional and not fully concluded agreement)
  • The Human race made their first tentative steps into space (the human race made their first hesitant and uncertain steps into space)
Try to use the word "Tentative" at least ten times in the next 2 days to see if you can use it in the correct form and remember this word moving forward. The word tentative is personally one of my favourites and I like to use this word where possible as it sounds so much nicer than other alternatives.

Glabrous - Vocabulary Word List

Glabrous Definition:

Having no hairs, being smooth.

Examples:
  • The man shaved his head to reveal a glabrous scalp (having a bald head so hairless and smooth)
  • The leaves of the plant were smooth and glabrous (the leaves had a smooth and hairless texture)
Try to use the word "Glabrous" at least ten times in the next 2 days to see if you can use it in the correct form and remember this word moving forward. The word glabrous is not one many people will know and is not used very much in any conversation or written context so it will create a talking point when you use it.

Algorithm - Vocabulary Word List

Algorithm Definition:

A step by step process to solve a problem or procedure. It is a mathematical term mainly used today in the computer applicaton field but can be used in linguistics also.

Examples:
  • Googles algorithm places sites in its search engine (this algorithm decides how relevant each website is for search engines)
  • The Erlang algorithm delivers the staff requirements in a call centre (the Erlang algorithm decides how many staff are required to answer all calls in a specific time period to achieve an effective customer service)
  • Finding the largest number in an unsorted list of numbers is an algorithm (the process looks at each number once then places them in order from smallest to largest)
Try to use the word "Algorithm" at least ten times in the next 2 days to see if you can use it in the correct form and remember this word moving forward. The word algorithm is a great word to use in the business world as it is wonderful for using to explain processes and forumlas.

Uniform - Vocabulary Word List

Uniform Definition:

Always the same or consistent so it is the same throughout with no variation.

Examples:
  • Policemen wear a uniform (this clothing is the same throughout the whole police force)
  • The pillars of a building are set at uniform intervals (the space between each pillar is the same)
  • A bank wishes to deliver a high level uniform customer service (the customer service to its customers is always the same)
